Best Looks of Essence Magz Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon

Thursday, 28 February 2008

L-R: Rashida Jones, Gabrielle Union and Jada Pinkett

Last week, Essence Magazine began a new tradition of holding an Annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon in Beverly Hills attended by many gorgeous celebs.

I don't know how I feel about this. Whilst being Welsh I understand wanting to "honour" your own community, especially when you feel the "mainstream" under value or ignore many of your stars, but this also stinks of reverse racism to me. It's one of those "if it was a White Women in Hollywood Luncheon it anger many people so why is it ok for another race to do"? You know? While I am a very opinionated person, I'm on the fence with this as I can see both sides of the coin. What do you all think??

Well regardless of the politics and all that, there's no denying that some of the ladies who attended looked fab!

Gabrielle Union was very sexy in a flirty strapless LBD. The back on this dress just made it! It had one strap across the top and was then open - so hot!

Quincy's daughters Rashida and Kidada were both at the event, and Rashida looked stylish in a burgandy one shoulder dress with a black sash around the waist. The frills on the sleeve are so trendy right now!

But my favourite was Jada Pinkett who attended with doting hubby Will Smith and looked stunning in a vintage Nina Ricci maxi dress. The cream and red spotted halter neck looked so bright and summer, it was a lovely change. And the brown belt and gold bracelets added a cute bohemian vibe. Will sure loved it, he was all over her!

Sanaa Lathan is Stunning at L.A. Premiere of A Raisin in the Sun

Thursday, 14 February 2008

L-R: Angel Moore, Sanaa Lathan and Monique Coleman

The L.A. Premiere of the new A Raisin in the Sun movie was held on Monday and on the red carpet, one of the film's stars, Sanaa Lathan, stole the show!

The Brown Sugar actress looked beautiful and classy in an off-the-shoulder full length black gown and a Daniel Swarovski Belvedere clutch with a crystal clasp.

Also looking great in black was High School Musical star Monique Coleman who looked cute in a simple shift dress with satin panels and a waist belt.

Another of my fav looks was Angel Moore's bright baby doll dress with turqouise, navy and gold panels. It almost seems like the young Monique and older Angel should have swapped dresses though!

L-R: Angell Conwell, Gabrielle Union and Elise Neal

From an Angel to an Angell - Angell Conwell to be precise who looked sexy in a purple ruffled blouse and high waisted black trousers.

Elise Neal wore a floaty spotted black dress which contrasted well with her sleek bob and pointed courts.

And red carpet expert Gabrielle Union looked cute in a cream shift and matching earrings, but I think the knee high boots and brown satchel make it too casual.

A Little Bit Savile Row, A Little Bit Rock and Roll - Designer Jay Godfrey Talks About His Latest Collection and Gives Us a Sneak Peak!

Wednesday, 9 January 2008

Have you heard of Jay Godfrey? If you haven’t yet, trust me when I say you’ll know his name soon! Jay is an up and coming fashion designer from Toronto and now based in New York, whose sexy and youthful dresses have been a hit with Hollywood’s hottest stars.

Recognised for his signature one shoulder dresses and bows, Jay can count Hayden Panettiere, Gabrielle Union, Eva Mendes and Carmen Electra among the celebrities who are already fans of his cocktail dresses and full length gowns.

OMG I Love Her Style has a sneak peak at his incredible Spring 2008 Collection and a fabulous interview with the man himself. Check it out!:

Q: Hi Jay, first of all I want to say I love your designs! There have been so many questions I’ve been dying to ask you! Firstly, I was wondering how you got into fashion in the first place, since you started out in finance! Was it always a passion of yours?

A: I’ve always loved fashion. While my colleagues in investment banking were reading the Wall Street Journal, I was reading Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. One day, after 14 months in finance, I decided “enough was enough” and I left Solomon Smith Barney to pursue my dream of designing. I enrolled in Parson, interned at Oscar de la Renta, started my own label. I’m the perfect example of what can happen when you set out to follow your dreams and then they start coming true.

Q: You definitely are! With your success, you’ve had the opportunity to dress so many beautiful and famous women, what epitomises a Jay Godfrey woman to you?

A: The Jay Godfrey woman is confident, strong, and sexy. She’s fashion-forward and never afraid of taking calculated risks.

Q: Sounds like many of the celebs you've dressed! Is there a celebrity you haven’t dressed yet who you’d love to see in one of your designs?

A: I would love to dress Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz and Queen Rania of Jordan.

Q: Interesting choices. Which young starlet do you think we should all be watching out for as a future fashion icon? Who’s style do you love right now?

A: Diane Kruger, Charlotte Casiraghi, and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld.

Q: So many young people look up to the celebrities who wear your clothes as fashion icons, but who is your fashion icon?

A: David Bowie, Tommy Nutter, Keith Richards, and Karl Lagerfeld… I can never chose just one.

Iconic Chanel Fashion Designer Karl Lagerfeld

Q: How would you describe your own personal style? How do you like to dress?

A: A little bit Savile Row, a little bit Rock and Roll.

Q: Very cool. Who or what would you say inspires your collections?

A: I take inspiration from old photographs, exotic landscapes or places, as well as the treatment of color and surfaces in other art forms like interior design. I also look to great architects like Richard Serra and sculptors like Santiago Calatrava. Finally, I take cues from trend-setting confident and sexy women like my wife, Dara.

Q: That's so sweet! How long does it take you to create an entire collection, from conception to the runway? And how long before a season are you thinking about what that collection will be like?

A: It takes about three months to create an entire collection. I start by sketching. I let the sketches sit for a few days and then I go back and edit. The designs I select at this point usually make it into the final collection. We sample the pieces, take appointments with buyers, and ship to stores a few months later.

Being a designer is a 24-hour a day job. I am constantly thinking about new designs and the next season. It’s a lot less regimented than one would think.

Q: Sounds like an interesting job. I’ve seen your Spring 2008 Collection and it’s so fun and feminine, what styles do you think fashionistas should be stocking up on now to be ahead of the pack for next season?

A: Ombre fabrics, anything with zippered trim, silhouettes that show off the new erogenous zone: the shoulder.

Q: You are famous for the one shoulder dresses! I’ve fallen in love with your scratch-print shift dress as well as your white strapless bow dress, but which are your favourite pieces from your Spring 2008 Collection?

Scratch Print Shift Dress (left and middle) and White Strapless Bow Dress (right) both from the Jay Godfrey Spring 2008 Collection

A: My favorites are the Jackson Pollack scratch-print party dress and the zipper shift dress.

Q: As for this season, what is your favourite fashion trend for autumn/winter 2007-2008?

A: Bold color.

Petra Nemcova (left and right) and Brittany Snow (middle) both wearing Jay Godfrey dresses

Q: And is there a trend you hate and want to banish?!

A: Flats for evening.

Q: Ha ha! Better get those heels out girls! Do you have any advice for any budding young designers who may be reading this and wondering how to get into the fashion industry?

A: Start simple and build from there. Become good at one thing before you become good at many.

Q: And finally, your star has risen so quickly since you launched you first collection two years ago, what’s next for you? What can we expect to see from you in the future? Do you any exciting new projects coming up?

Zoe Saldana (left), Vanessa Hudgens (middle) and Katherine McPhee (right) all wearing Jay Godfrey

A: I am expanding the collection to include contemporary separates and day dresses for Fall 2009. Eventually, I would love to get into other categories such as accessories.

Thank you so much for your time Jay, it truly has been an honour! I’d like to wish you the best of luck in the future and I look forward to seeing the next collection of Jay Godfrey designs.

If you’d like to get your hands on a Jay Godfrey design, they can be found at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales and Intermix stores as well as high-end boutique stores in the United States, Canada, Asia and Germany.

Gabrielle Union in Red Satin Alberta Ferretti

Thursday, 13 December 2007

Woohoo! Gabrielle Union looked super sultry in a strapless, wine coloured satin pencil dress from the Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti AUtumn 2007 Collection at the Perfect Holiday Party Marquee in NYC on Sunday.

The ruched dress hugged her curves perfectly and she looked red hot, topping off the look with black Jimmy Choo courts. You wanna watch out ladies - Gabbie has a bit of a reputation with "taken" men!

We should all be ok though as I hear she may be cosying up to Perfect Holiday co-star Morris Chestnut...hmmmm. Wonder if it's true?? Perhaps this outfit was to impress him?! I'm thinking it probably worked!

Black and White Dresses

Monday, 1 October 2007

Demi Moore starts us off on the black and white trend of dresses, with this chiffon bell sleeved LBD she wore during a photocall at the 55th San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain on Friday. She looked lovely in this slightly goth inspired style, which she wore with lace shoes, and a large statement ring.

I am all in all a huge fan of the natural look, but IMO she could have done with putting a little more effort into her hair and make-up, it is a photocall!

The goregous Thandie Newton wore this black bubble dress with a sheer neckline and white belt to The Hospital Club Awards in London on Thursday, with cute black peep toes and her hair swept back into a so sophis chignon. Cute, fashionable and fun. Take a closer look at the flowers on her skirt :)

Sophie Marceau also chose an LBD, in the style of this simple slash neck shift dress, for the 23rd International Haifa Film Festival last week. Her choice of footwear is a little questionable but I guess she was going for quirky! She still looks beautiful though.

And the last lady in black is Gabrielle Union, who bucked the trend for LBD's and opted for a floor length version with a plunging neckline and halter neck, which she wore to the Congressional Black Caucus Awards Gala on Saturday. The gleam on the fabric is very trendy right now and the shape shows off Gabrielle's figure well.

Now whilst black may be ever popular, some celebs are opting to dress in winter white instead, like Lucy Liu seen here looking dazzling in a floor length white gown at the launch of Chivas' new luxury whisky on Friday. I love the different aspects of this dress with its draping neckline, fitted skirt around the hips and then long, flowing bottom.

I think a dainty silver clutch would have looked better than this big naval inspired bag though, don't you?

And lastly, also in white, we have the glowing (hehe) Christina Aguilera with hubby Jordan at Magnolia on Sunset in Hollywood on Friday doing the casual version of the white dress

This look is very pretty and feminine, perfect for a pregnant lady don't you agree lol, and whilst it's floaty, it's still fitted enough to show off those curves. She layered up with a plain grey cardi and of course Christina had on her high heels, black eyeshadow and red lipstick. Well would we recognise her without it??!

The layered necklaces in different lengths is also a nice touch.

Kim Kardashian was seen exiting Opera nightclub on the 26th after it's grand opening wearing a very trendy grey jumpsuit and some sky high black heels. I'm not a huge Kim K fan but credit where credit's due, she does look good here. So will Opera be the new celeb hotspot I wonder?

So Orlando Bloom's got a new gal pal, the beautiful Naomie Harris, his co-star from Pirates of the Caribbean, whom he took out for a romantic meal in London on Wednesday. He sure knows how t pick stylish ladies! First Kate Bosworth and know Naomie who looked so pretty in her patterned long top, straight leg jeans and cool silver flats. I love the look and hope to see a lot more of the girl!

Rihanna was out and about picking up some supplies from a beauty store in Hollywood on Tuesday, I wonder what her secret products are for looking so great? She looked 70s glam with her huge curls, big collared shirt, waitcoar, denim shorts and black boots. I love this look and it takes a lot of guts to where it shopping!

Here's a little bit of British style with everyone's favourite Spice Girls, Victoria Beckham who was seen looking super glam whilst shopping for health food on Thursday. The Spice Diva wore skinny white cropped trousers, a brown vest, her signature big shades and a hooooooooot pair of shoes!

Anne Hathaway and her boyfriend went out to a restaurant in Lower Manhatten on Wednesday and the actress looked sweet and stylish in her pretty navy blue dress and brown flats. She looked young and fresh with her hair swept back and no make-up.

Charlize Theron looked casual and cool leaving Angelini Restaurant on Wednesday. She layered up with a plack vest, brown jumper and a chic black scarf teamed with cropped jeans and some brown gladiator sandals. She looks laidback but gorgeous!

I haven't seen a lot of Ciara lately but the Princess of Crunk was at the Screamfest 2007 Press Conference recently looking lovely in her green polo shirt, bootcut jeans and yellow wedges. She looked young, bright and funky and her legs looked oh so long!

For more pics of Ciara

Actress Gabrielle Union was at the Lucky Magazine and Foley & Corinna Resort Collection Launch in L.A. on Wednesday glowing in her funky brown and orange dress and brown sandals. This is the perfect party look, stylish, easy-to-wear and sexy.

And finally we have Haylie Duff. The lesser known Duff sister is certainly trying to make her mark on the celeb seen these days, from clubbing every week with sister Hilary, to a possible romance with Brody Jenner, to hitting up loads of celeb events looking pretty stylish. She's certainly on her way to Hilary's status! She looked adorable at the Tweety Boutique Opening in Beverly Hills on Wednesday in this beautiful yellow and white bandeau dress but she really needs to sort her hair out, it's getting boring and her roots need a touch up quick!
